Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player ahead of the Western Conference Finals. In Game 1, he learned he’s going to need to play like it if the Oklahoma City Thunder are going to get by Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
SGA scored 24 points with 12 assists and five steals in OKC’s 122-115 double-overtime loss at home, but shot just 7-for-23 from the field and 2-for-7 from three-point range. He still managed to get to the free throw line at his regular-season average of nine times, but he also committed four turnovers and posted the worst +/- of any Thunder player at -14.
After the game, Gilgeous-Alexander talked about adjusting to playing offense against Wembanyama, who blocked three shots to go with his 41 points and 24 rebounds.
“I think you get caught worrying about it too much and you lose that aggression, and that’s when they really get a stranglehold of the game,” SGA said of Wemby.
“You’ve got to be able to be aggressive, but also be smart.”
After the loss, Gilgeous-Alexander and the defending champions face an important Game 2 on Wednesday to avoid taking a 2-0 deficit on the road to San Antonio.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. SGA’s back-to-back MVPs are the seventh occasion of the same player winning the award two years in a row since 2000. With that being said, how many of the players to be named NBA MVP since 1955-56 can you name in seven minutes?
Good luck!
