This French NBA prospect is on the rise and climbing draft boards

As France continues to solidify its reputation as a fertile ground for NBA talent, the 2025 NBA Draft is shaping up to feature another wave of promising French prospects.

Among the notable names are Nolan Traore and Noa Essengue, both tipped as potential lottery selections. However, one player’s rapid ascent has garnered increasing attention: Noah Penda.

Penda, a 6-foot-8 forward, has emerged as a standout performer for Le Mans in France’s top-tier Betclic ELITE league. His blend of size, versatility and defensive prowess has made him a compelling two-way prospect.

While many draft boards initially projected him as a second-round pick, some analysts now suggest Penda could break into the first round.

Although not yet regarded as an elite prospect, the youngster’s steady development and well-rounded skill set have firmly placed him on the radar of NBA scouts. With his 20th birthday having just passed on Jan. 7, he has already proved himself to be a critical piece for Le Mans, leading it to a respectable record in a highly competitive domestic league.

Statistical Highlights

Penda’s impact on both ends of the floor is reflected in his stats. Through 27 minutes per game, he is averaging 10.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.4 blocks. These numbers underscore his defensive versatility, with his 1.4 blocks per game leading the entire Betclic ELITE and his 1.8 steals per game ranking third.

Offensively, Penda’s shooting percentages are still a work in progress. He is shooting 42.9 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 69.6 percent from the free-throw line. These figures highlight the areas for improvement but are not uncommon for a player still adjusting to the professional ranks.

Standout Performances

The French forward’s potential has been on display in several key performances this season. On Oct. 5, he recorded a season-high 19 points, including three three-pointers, showcasing his offensive upside. He has surpassed double-digit scoring in six games, including a three-game streak from mid-November to early December.

Defensively, Penda has been particularly impactful. In his last four games, he has tallied 10 steals, including a three-steal effort against Stade Rochelais late in December. His shot-blocking ability was evident in the same game, where he registered three blocks.

International Success

Penda’s impressive summer at the 2024 FIBA U20 EuroBasket further bolstered his draft stock. He averaged 11.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists, leading France to a gold medal.

In the championship game against Slovenia, the gold-medal winner delivered a commanding performance with 15 points, 14 rebounds and five assists, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team alongside fellow French standout Zacharie Perrin, who was named MVP.

Draft Outlook

Penda’s defensive capabilities make him an attractive prospect for NBA teams seeking a versatile stopper. His ability to guard multiple positions, coupled with his shot-blocking and steal rates, provides a strong foundation for his professional future.

However, to secure a higher draft position, the promising talent must demonstrate greater consistency on the offensive end. If he can refine his shooting and develop into a reliable outside threat, his stock could rise significantly, potentially solidifying him as a first-round pick.
