Thunder Projected to Select Prospect Who 'Checks All the Boxes' in 2025 Draft

The Oklahoma City Thunder are fresh off winning a championship on Sunday night and their celebration continued on Tuesday as they paraded through the streets of Oklahoma City.

While the Thunder are still celebrating their championship, their front office has a quick turnaround as their focus now shifts to the first round of the NBA Draft on Wednesday night.

Oklahoma City has two selections in the first round of the draft, though there have been reports that they could either package the two picks together to move up or trade away the 24th pick and keep the 15th pick.

Either way, the Thunder have some key decisions to make on Wednesday night as they try to upgrade their roster even more.

In a recent mock draft by ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, he has the Thunder selecting Washington State guard Cedric Coward 15th overall.

“Between his 7-foot-2 wingspan and his ability to light things up from the perimeter, Coward checks off all the boxes for being a potential star and steal in this draft,” Siegel wrote. “Although the Thunder already have a full roster heading into the offseason, Coward is worth moving someone for, as he could instantly become a starter for the 2024-25 NBA champions.”

Last season, Coward averaged 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 blocks per game while shooting 55.7% from the field and 40.0% from three-point range in only six games due to injury.

Despite his injury-shortened season, Coward has emerged as a potential lottery pick in Wednesday’s first round due to his three-point shooting.

By adding Coward to their roster, the Thunder could be getting a future star to pair alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the backcourt, which could keep their championship window open even longer due to the young core they have already put together.

Of course, the Thunder do have limited roster space open and because of that, they could instead look to move their picks in the first round for future draft capital or package them together to possibly move into the lottery.
