The Los Angeles Lakers have been warned that one potential ‘solution’ at center might not be the right fit.
Speaking immediately after playoff elimination to the Minnesota Timberwolves, LA Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka pledged to strengthen at the center position this offseason.
Pelinka is under pressure to produce, and one ray of hope emerged when Deandre Ayton hit free agency, after a buyout was agreed with the Portland Trail Blazers and the player’s representatives.
Shams Charania reported Ayton is a player the Lakers are looking at as they seek to strengthen.
Deandre Ayton is also a player with personal connection to Luka Doncic, and high admiration for the LA Lakers superstar.
But is he really the perfect fit for the Slovenian? ESPN insider Tim MacMahon argues not.
He told The Hoop Collective: “I don’t think Ayton is the kind of center that is a fit with Luka.”
He cited a failed partnership between Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis on the Dallas Mavericks.
“Like, Ayton wants to post up. You remember the whole Porzingis post up thing with Luka was a total disaster.
“Luka needs a big who either can be that dynamic pick and roll lob threat or can shoot the three, space the floor.”
MacMahon went on to name Brook Lopez and Clint Capela as two options who could suit Luka Doncic a lot better.
The Athletic report the Lakers are interested in both players, with Lopez potentially returning for a second spell in LA.
What’s clear is the Lakers have to do something, and there is no perfect solution, in a league where centers are in-demand, and the Lakers are low on assets.
But Doncic is also an asset in himself. Playing alongside the star should be a big attraction for centers, with his ability to assist for easy dunks.
