Timberwolves’ 2026 Christmas Game Carries a Deeper Meaning

This is the first time in franchise history that the NBA has awarded the Wolves a home game on Christmas—a direct reflection of the trajectory this team is on and the excitement that surrounds them.

The Timberwolves have played on Christmas four times, which is tied with the New Orleans Pelicans and the Indiana Pacers for the third-fewest appearances in NBA history. The Wolves played in Oklahoma City in 2016, in LA against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017, in Texas against the Dallas Mavericks in 2024, and in Colorado against the Denver Nuggets in 2025.

Now, the Wolves will be in Minnesota on Dec. 25 against a team employing the back-to-back Most Valuable Player in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The Wolves have earned this stage

Minnesota’s streak of three straight seasons playing on Christmas comes after its first Western Conference Finals berth in 20 years in 2024. During that season, the Wolves established themselves as a West-contending team worthy of national airwaves, led by superstar Anthony Edwards, who has quickly become must-see TV all by himself.

The Wolves have also backed up the NBA’s vote of confidence on Christmas these last two years by being part of some classic performances:

• At Mavericks, 2024: Edwards and Julius Randle combine for 49 points to stave off a ferocious comeback by Kyrie Irving (39 points) and the Mavs, winning 105-99 in regulation (This was also Luka Doncic’s final game in a Mavs uniform).
• At Nuggets, 2025: Nikola Jokic shovels in an unbelievable 56-point performance that featured him shooting 15 of 21 from the floor and 22 of 23 from the free-throw line and also recording 16 rebounds and 15 assists. Denver ended up winning in overtime 142-138 despite Edwards going for 44 points and Randle for 32 points.

The Wolves playing at home on Christmas Day this year is no doubt a reflection of what this team has recently accomplished and the superstar they employ, but it is also a testament to the new excitement that is refreshing this organization as it enters the 2026-27 season. 

LaMelo Ball lands in Minnesota, forming one of the NBA’s most exciting offensive backcourts between him and Edwards. Ball gives the Wolves a consistently electric point guard capable of slinging no-look passes in between defenders’ legs and stepping back for one-legged threes. 

He is the type of talent worthy of national airwaves and will consistently get that opportunity in Minnesota. Assuming Ball is available, this will be his first time playing on Christmas Day. The Charlotte Hornets are the only active NBA team never to play on Dec. 25.

Ball will orchestrate the flashy passes. He will hit Rudy Gobert for a lob or two. Edwards will swish in a side-step three and yell at whoever is closest to him. Jaden McDaniels will cross over and hit his patented fading mid-range jumper.

Ayo Dosunmu will flash down the court in transition, kicking the ball to Bones Hyland, who will connect on a three and hit his “Skelly Celly” at the Target Center crowd. Terrence Shannon Jr. will bully his way to the rim and throw down an electric dunk. Or maybe he will just draw a charge. Joan Beringer will block a shot and run back on offense at the speed of light.

The Wolves have plenty of talent to make this year’s Christmas Day game another memorable one against a Thunder team that I still have projected to finish second in the West. The on-court product should be competitive, and the Wolves will be playing with refreshed aesthetics.

The national crowd tuning into Wolves-Thunder this year will be treated to Minnesota’s new rebrand, featuring three new jerseys (all of which would fit perfectly with the Christmas vibe), new courts, and a new logo. 

Target Center—which underwent a roughly $1.6 million renovation ahead of last season to implement theater lighting—will feel completely different from the years past that fans remember for long losing streaks and barely any national TV attention. The team on that new court, in those new jerseys, and under that lighting will have a new look, too.

All of that culminates in a season of excitement for the Timberwolves that the NBA is rewarding with the franchise’s first home Christmas Day game.
