Timberwolves are expected to trade away one notable player

The Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to make some room after landing Jonathan Kuminga.

Minnesota is expected to trade away veteran wing Josh Green, according to a report on Wednesday by Jon Krawczynski and Sam Amick of The Athletic. The report notes that the Timberwolves need to free up another $3 million in cap space to stay under the second apron of the luxury tax amid the impending addition of Kuminga.

The ex-NBA champion forward Kuminga agreed earlier in the day Wednesday to sign with Minnesota in free agency. Kuminga is getting a multi-year deal from the Timberwolves with an interesting contract structure.

As for Green, 25, he arrived in Minnesota last month as an add-on in the LaMelo Ball blockbuster trade with the Charlotte Hornets. Green is set to make $14.7 million next season before becoming a free agent in 2027.

The Athletic report notes that the Timberwolves could potentially get under the second apron by trading Green for another player who is making less salary. Alternately, Minnesota could even look to waive-and-stretch Green in order to get off his contract.

Green is a former first-round pick who is known as an above-average defender and is a career 38.7 percent three-point shooter. While he only averaged 4.3 points per game last season for Charlotte, Green peaked at 9.1 points per game for the Dallas Mavericks in 2022-23 and later served as a key bench cog for the Mavs during their 2024 NBA Finals run.

The 6-foot-6 Green once even went viral for an altercation with Lakers star Austin Reaves during a game. But it does not look like Green will be sticking around in Minnesota next season due to the team’s financial constraints.
