The Minnesota Timberwolves franchise began in 1989 and rose to prominence with the drafting of high school basketball superstar Kevin Garnett in 1995, which made him the first player to leap from that level of basketball to the big time in over two decades.
Garnett's gritty, defensive minded skills made him the talk of Minneapolis/St. Paul area and beyond for several years until he was acquired by the Boston Celtics in 2017, where he went on to win his first and only NBA Championship in 2008.
Seventeen years later, the Timberwolves still haven't won a league title, but Garnett remains one of its most iconic figures for what he did for the franchise.
Minnesota Coach Chris Finch shared his thoughts on Garnett's upcoming return for a jersey retirement ceremony during which he revealed his excitement.
Finch spoke to reports about the exciting upcoming situation.
"Yeah it's exciting news for the club for sure," he said. "I know it's been a priority for (co-owner) Marc (Lore) and (co-owner) Alex (Rodriguez) and ownership to be able to reach out and bring KG back into the fold.
"I don't know much of the details about anything, just learned about it really this morning myself but yeah it's an exciting time."
NBA reporter Shams Charania shared that Garnett is expected to work with the Timberwolves and Lynx NBA and WNBA franchises in a new role involving business, community outreach and content creation efforts.
Garnett is a veteran podcaster and co-host of 'KG Certified' with Paul Pierce, his former Celtics teammate, who has appeared on television NBA broadcasts for years.
Garnett averaged 19.8 points per game and 11 rebounds in 14 seasons with Minnesota.
The Timberwolves will take on the NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder at 9:30 p.m. tonight at the Target Center.
Minnesota has carried out crucial changes to its lineup in recent years with hopes of winning its first-ever NBA title behind Finch and Anthony Edwards.
The Timberwolves' scoring balance has improved lately with Julius Randle leading the team in scoring as many times (4) as Edwards during its latest stretch of seven wins in nine games.
Finch's team is 17-10 on the season, third in the Northwest Division.
The Timberwolves' fall from Western Conference favorites to also-rans has not been taken lightly by Finch and others.
Tonight, his team will have a chance to prove it belongs among the NBA's upper echelon yet again with Garnett serving as motivational fuel.
