The Timberwolves aren’t expected to make a change on the sideline.
Head coach Chris Finch is likely to return for the 2026-27 season, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, who reported Finch “will be back for his sixth full season” following Minnesota’s playoff exit (via Hoops Rumors).
Finch has been steady since taking over in February 2021. He owns a 258-193 record, good for a .572 winning percentage, and has guided the Timberwolves to the playoffs in each of his five full seasons. That includes back-to-back trips to the Western Conference finals in 2024 and 2025.
This year followed a familiar script. Minnesota went 49-33 for the second straight season, entered as the No. 6 seed, knocked off Denver in the first round, then ran into a buzzsaw in San Antonio in the semifinals.
Finch, 56, has two years remaining on his contract. After the elimination, he acknowledged the gap between Minnesota and the West’s top teams may require some changes.
“You either gotta be a problem or have a solution,” Finch said. “You have to be built in a way that troubles your opponent with something they don’t have or have something to counter what they do have.”
In other words, standing pat may not be enough.
Front office stability appears to be a priority. Ownership — led by Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez — is interested in extending president of basketball operations Tim Connelly, per Krawczynski.
There’s also support internally for general manager Matt Lloyd, who drew interest from Chicago before the Bulls ultimately hired Bryson Graham.
So while changes could be coming to the roster, the structure at the top is expected to remain intact.
