The Minnesota Timberwolves had the 17th pick in the first round of the NBA Draft. It was a wide-open field, but the Timberwolves were set on selecting a big man to give the team much-needed depth.
The front office selected promising French youngster Joan Beringer. At only 18, Beringer is a raw prospect, but the Timberwolves saw the potential in him becoming a long-term piece for the team who can develop within the system.
The Timberwolves already have a deep roster, but they have needed frontcourt depth for a long while. Naz Reid, Julius Randle, and Rudy Gobert have been fantastic as the primary rotation, but they need more support in the regular season and, eventually, the Playoffs.
Beringer is not the complete product, but his raw potential is clear. Everyone in the Timberwolves organization is stoked, including general manager Matt Lloyd, who answered questions after the 2025 NBA Draft.
Since the Timberwolves will remain reliant on their set rotation, Beringer will probably be a developmental project. He can get minutes here and there, but he will mostly play garbage time minutes while spending time with the Iowa Wolves.
He only started playing basketball at 14, so he is still a raw prospect. However, being a big man in the NBA can be easier if one has a mentor. Thankfully for Beringer, he not only has an experienced mentor in Gobert, but he has another Frenchman to guide him during his NBA career.

“Yeah I think if you look at the young group of guys we have one guy at every position right now… we have to get our draft picks right then we have to apart of player development… we’re going to start… pic.twitter.com/QaNPDJosN5
GM Lloyd was happy that the Timberwolves got him at #17, as they were eyeing him for a while.
"The two(Gobert) of them will hit it off. Gobert will be saying you can’t eat this, you can’t eat this, you gotta do this, and he’ll fold him into his routine, and it’ll serve Joan well. He’s a great kid, and he’s a kid, but he has world experience," Lloyd said after the first round. "If I had to bet on his intangibles, I would. His tools are A+. Everything else will come when he gains experience. If that’s the category of good dudes, he definitely fits into it."
Since the Timberwolves will keep relying on their set rotation, Beringer will probably be a developmental project. He can get minutes here and there, but he will mostly play garbage time minutes, while spending time with the Iowa Wolves.
That will benefit him because he can gain experience in the G-League while learning from Gobert and the Timberwolves' coaches.
Wolves GM Matt Lloyd on where Joan Beringer can grow

“We were pretty encouraged by his 15 foot and in game when we worked him out, and it’s not something they really challenged him to do at times… I have a good friend on the coaching staff who promised me he can shoot 15-17… pic.twitter.com/dK0TJSw1LS
The potential is there, but it will be a gradual process. That is natural for players who started a bit later than most players. He has all the physical tools, he needs tutelage and experience playing in the NBA.
