The Minnesota Timberwolves are looking for ways to get better this offseason after a second-round playoff exit against the San Antonio Spurs last month. Many anticipate that the Timberwolves will look to trade Julius Randle this offseason as they try to construct a better roster around superstar Anthony Edwards.
However, not every rumor or piece of information should be taken at face value this time of year, as recently noted by Timberwolves beat writer Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.
“Much of the discussion right after the season is over is largely pointless. Executives and agents are jockeying for position, making outlandish offers and taking turns hanging up on one another,” reported Krawczynski. “For instance, team sources say one team that shall remain nameless to protect the shameless called the Timberwolves and offered a sparingly used bench player averaging single-digit points for Reid.”
It’s safe to say that the former Sixth Man of the Year is worth a bit more than just one bench player. Reid has blossomed into a strong role player for the Timberwolves, able to stretch the floor from beyond the three-point line and provide decent defense on the other end of the floor, and the team rewarded him accordingly with a massive contract last offseason.
However, although trading Reid probably won’t be in the cards, the Timberwolves do need to explore every avenue to get better this summer, because the Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder are only going to continue to separate themselves from the pack moving forward. Whether that means trading Randle, signing an under-the-radar free agent, or something else entirely, the clock is already ticking on this current era of Timberwolves basketball.
