Timberwolves officially waive John Konchar after Josh Green trade

The Minnesota Timberwolves needed to pull off a trade to help clear salary for the pending signing of free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga, and they did so on Friday by sending Josh Green to the Utah Jazz in a three-team trade that also saw them acquire veteran wing John Konchar in return. The Timberwolves were then expected to waive and stretch Konchar’s contract to free salary cap room, and they executed that move over the weekend, as per ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel.

John Konchar was under contract with the Timberwolves for one more season at slightly over $6 million after the trade, and he was set to hit unrestricted free agency next offseason. He now gets to potentially choose a new team in time for training camp in a little over one month.

The former Purdue Fort Wayne star went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft and began his career with the Memphis Grizzlies via two-way contract. He played the first seven and half seasons of his career with the Grizzlies before being traded to the Jazz via the Jaren Jackson Jr. deal this past deadline.

He appeared in a total of 56 games, including eight starts, at a little over 19 minutes per game splitting time between the Grizzlies and Jazz this past season. He averaged 4.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals with splits of 47.2 percent shooting from the field, 28.3 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 72.7 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
