D’Angelo Russell’s future with the Timberwolves is a big question mark. There were reports, including one from Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, saying that the team placed him on the trading block earlier in the offseason.
Now it seems that Russell will stay put. Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor appeared on The Scoop podcast with Darren Wolfson from 5 Eyewitness News on Thursday and discussed Russell’s role with the team next season:
“[Head coach Chris Finch] believes that with the new lineup, and with Russell in that lineup, that he’ll have a much better year just because of the way we’re going to play. He says he thinks there’s a big upside for Russell with this group of (players). That’s to his advantage and to our advantage if it works out.”
Taylor’s comments suggest that Russell features heavily in the team’s plans next season. Russell was not included in the blockbuster trade for Rudy Gobert, which evidently is a positive sign for his future in Minnesota.

Russell is entering the final year of his four-year, $117 million contract. Unless the 26-year-old point guard signs an extension with the Timberwolves he will become a free agent next summer. It remains to be seen if next season will be his final year in Minnesota.
With the pieces they have, the Timberwolves need a creator and playmaker like Russell. Last season he averaged 18.1 points and 7.1 assists in 32 minutes over 65 games and he shot 34 percent from 3-point range. Russell’s talent is hard to replace and he still has plenty of basketball ahead of him.
