Timberwolves Should Pivot to Stephen Curry

The Minnesota Timberwolves haven't even seen newly acquired point guard LaMelo Ball play with their team yet, but before he steps on the court with Timberwolves gear on, the team should trade him to the Golden State Warriors in a package for Stephen Curry.

When the Timberwolves made the move for Ball in late June, the Warriors were still holding out hope they could acquire LeBron James in free agency.

But now that James has chosen the Philadelphia 76ers as his next home, the Warriors need to seriously think about rebuilding, and that would include trading Curry, their long-time franchise player who, at age 38, is entering the final years of his Hall of Fame career.

If he goes, then the Timberwolves would be an ideal landing spot.

Timberwolves Trade Package for Stephen Curry

Curry makes $62.6 million this coming season in the final year of his contract, and if he were to be traded to Minnesota, the team would need to match his salary in a trade.

Unfortunately for Ball, he plays PG, the same position as Curry, and he also makes $40.7 million, so he has to be a part of this trade even before he plays a single game for Minnesota.

While it would have been cool to see Ball play with Timberwolves superstar Anthony Edwards, it would be way cooler to see Edwards play with Curry, his teammate on Team USA at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, when they won a gold medal together.

In addition to Ball, the Wolves would need to trade Josh Green -- who also came over from the Charlotte Hornets in the Ball trade -- and his $14.7 million salary, plus the injured Donte DiVicenzo and his $12.5 million salary.

To balance out the money, as Minnesota would be sending out $67.9 million in this proposed deal, the Warriors could include Gui Santos and his $4.6 million salary, pushing their outgoing money to $67.2 million, making the money very close in a trade.

In addition to the players involved, Minnesota would also give the Warriors multiple draft picks and swaps to get the deal over the finish line.

For Minnesota, the reason for doing this trade is obvious, as getting Curry would elevate them to elite status in the league.

As for the Warriors, it would give them a younger point guard in Ball, along with another rotation player in Green and, when he returns to health, DiVincenzo, plus draft assets that will help the team going forward.

Minnesota's Lineup with Stephen Curry

If this proposed trade went through, Minnesota's lineup with Curry would look like this:

PG: Stephen Curry
SG: Anthony Edwards
SF: Ayo Dosunmu
PF: Jaden McDaniels
C: Rudy Gobert

Bench: Gui Santos, Bones Hyland, Joan Beringer, Jaylen Clark, Terrence Shannon Jr., Trey Lyles, Isaiah Evans

Overall, I like this version of the Timberwolves better than the one they are planning to trot out this season, as Curry is an elite player who is still levels above Ball despite being much older.

This starting five would be one of the strongest in the entire NBA and could help Minnesota challenge for the top seed in the NBA's stacked Western Conference.

Right now, the Timberwolves look like a good team heading into this season, but with Curry, they could actually win a title.

It would certainly not be an easy decision to trade away Ball before he even plays a game for the Timberwolves, but he would have to be part of the Curry trade, so that's the price that Minnesota would have to pay.

This Curry for Ball swap would be a true blockbuster deal, and one that both Minnesota and Golden State would seriously have to consider.

With training camps set to begin in late September, it's time that Minnesota and Golden State get on the phone and try to get a deal done.
