Timberwolves star's overtime explosion sends Celtics to first loss

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards missed two three-pointers late in the fourth quarter against the Boston Celtics. He wasn't going to let that happen again in overtime.

Edwards scored eight of his 38 points in overtime, as the Timberwolves dealt the Celtics their first loss of the season, 114-109. He also assisted on a Mike Conley three-pointer after tying up Jayson Tatum and recovering the loose ball after the jump.

After the game, Edwards told reporters he welcomed the challenge of guarding Tatum, who isolated on Edwards a minute-and-a-half into overtime. Making Edwards' defense more impressive was that he picked up his fifth foul one minute into the fourth quarter and still played 12 of the game's remaining 16 minutes without fouling out.

So far this season, Edwards is playing great offensively. He's averaging 28.2 points, shooting 52 percent from the field and 47.2 percent from three-point range. But he's also delivering on the other side of the ball, part of Minnesota's top-ranked defense.

With Karl-Anthony Towns starting slowly on the offensive end, Edwards is carrying Minnesota's offense. The Timberwolves defense could be very good — they held the Celtics, who were averaging 126.2 points per game, to 109 points, even with an extra five minutes of OT. If the defensive pressure continues, Edwards might be all the offense Minnesota needs to be a contender in the Western Conference.
