Tobias Harris shares high expectations for rising 76ers star

Philadelphia 76ers veteran forward Tobias Harris has high expectations for fourth-year guard Tyrese Maxey in the coming season. Maxey is emerging as a star who has developed into a 20-point-per-game scorer for the Sixers.

During a recent interview with Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Harris shared his belief that Maxey will become an All-Star in 2023-24.

"I think he’s an All-Star. I think he’s going to show people his playmaking ability as well," Harris said. "I think he’s such a great shot-maker and somebody who makes tough shots...I think we’re going to see a big leap for him this year."

Maxey could have a bigger role to begin the new season. Former MVP James Harden's trade request could force new head coach Nick Nurse to give Maxey some additional responsibilities. Harden's future with the franchise is unclear while Maxey is expected to be in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future. It makes sense to give the Kentucky product the keys to the offense.

During the 2023 postseason, Maxey emerged as a big-time performer for the Sixers, averaging 20.5 points and nearly five rebounds while shooting 40% from deep. Nurse will want to harness that production and see it become a consistent baseline, and Harris believes Maxey will do just that.

Joel Embiid's presence will also make things easier for the 22-year-old.

The reigning MVP will ensure Maxey has enough space to operate. Embiid's presence will draw all of the defensive attention, meaning Maxey can thrive in an on-ball role next to Embiid. Harris will also be a significant factor in any success the fourth-year guard has this season, and Harden's trade request could be the catalyst to Maxey becoming an All-Star with increased usage.

Harris clearly believes in him, Nurse will look to nurture his talent and Embiid will support any teammate who is focused on winning.

The upcoming season is shaping up to be a breakout year for Maxey. After what we saw last season, it's safe to say he's ready to make the leap.
