With LeBron James informing the Lakers he will decline his player option, everyone is speculating as to where the King will take his talents. Multiple teams have already emerged as potential favorites, and there are various reasons for each consideration. According to reports, James made this decision based on personal reasons, so let’s breakdown why each of the following teams makes sense for him to end up.

Golden State Warriors

The Warriors emerged as the early favorites to recruit James due to Draymond Green declining his player option. This frees up the necessary cap space for them to obtain free agents that they can build around Stephen Curry. The Dubs are all in on Curry remaining their franchise player for potentially the final few years of his career, so they have their sights set high.

The front office has already indicated interest in pursuing Anthony Davis and LeBron James, so all that is left is for the moves to be made. During their recent gold medal run in the 2024 Olympics, Curry and James reportedly developed a close bond, so it would not be surprising if James wanted to play with Curry again. Davis was also on that historic championship-winning team, so all the pieces could be coming together nicely for the Warriors.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The King’s hometown is always on the table when free agency arrives. With his career coming to a close, James could end up wanting to finish his career where it started. Many NBA fans would see this as the “storybook” ending for LeBron James. However, the Cavs currently have one of the highest salary amounts in NBA history, so major adjustments would need to be made.

A move between the Lakers and the Cavs would actually make sense if they can work out a deal.
