Damian Lillard became one of the most popular names in the NBA right after the Milwaukee Bucks released him and stretched his contract over five years to make room for former Indiana Pacers star Myles Turner.
Despite the unhappiness of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Lillard was reportedly "elated" to have full control of his fate. As soon as the news of his release became public, Lillard, who averaged 24.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 7.1 assists in the 2024-25 season, was linked with multiple teams, including some of the top squads in the association.
The Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat were mentioned as potential landing spots for the nine-time All-Star before another top franchise joined his sweepstakes.
Eric Nehm, Sam Amick and Joe Vardon of The Athletic reported on Wednesday that the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers might also be in the race to sign Lillard, whose last contract was worth $176.2 million.
"Not surprisingly, league sources say Lillard received calls from several contending teams quickly after the news of his Bucks’ ending broke. League sources say the Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers are known to be among the many teams that would have interest in doing a deal sooner rather than later." they said.
"The question is whether he wants to sign with a team now and rehabilitate while under their care or wait until next summer to reassess the situation."
Lillard's partnership with Antetokounmpo and coach Doc Rivers didn't provide the desired results. They couldn't get out of the first round of the playoffs together, with injuries ruining their plans to contend for the championship.
The Heat were one of the favorites to land the 34-year-old during his trade saga with the Portland Trail Blazers, but now the competition could be more difficult, with the Warriors, Celtics and Lakers also having real chances to compete in their respective conferences.
