The Portland Trail Blazers have plenty of talented players, but Toumani Camara remains underrated. He is the team’s most resolute defender, and he made Blazers history yet again on Thursday. Camara’s defense continues to stand out in Tiago Splitter’s system.

Toumani Camara Makes Trail Blazers History Yet Again

On Thursday, the Trail Blazers played against the New Orleans Pelicans. It was an uneventful game for the most part, but Camara reached a notable feat. He became the only player in NBA history to draw 100+ offensive fouls in a single season.

While Camara is an elite perimeter stopper, his biggest strength is his defensive playmaking. He always finds ways to draw offensive fouls from his opponents by selling contact on screens. Additionally, he times them just right to stop opposing possessions.

Camara is one of the most underrated players in the league, which bodes well for his NBA future. He already secured his long-term future by getting a multi-year extension last summer. Playing as well as he has recently shows Portland was right in giving him that deal.

Aside from his defensive impact, Camara has also upped his offensive game, putting that growth on display against the Pelicans. Camara became the fourth-ever Blazer to make 200+ threes in a season. The only other players to do that were Damian Lillard, Anfernee Simons, and Wesley Matthews.

Camara’s Defense Makes Him A Building Block

The Trail Blazers are a team with plenty of talented players. However, they do not have the same skill set as Camara, who has tremendous defensive potential. He already earned an All-Defensive Second Team nod in 2024-25, but he can do even better.

With his defensive playmaking, Camara is a dangerous opponent. Every go-to player who likes to utilize screens always has to be wary of him. Selling the contact goes a long way because that can turn a game on its head. At the same time, Camara is also a terror in the passing lanes and the paint.

Splitter’s system focuses on players like Shaedon Sharpe and Deni Avdija. They are good defenders when motivated, but they are more focused on the offensive end. That is why Camara, Sidy Cissoko, and Donovan Clingan all play huge roles for Portland due to their defensive abilities.

Camara could go down as one of the franchise’s greatest defenders with some offensive upside. He seems settled with the Blazers, so he could function as one of their building blocks moving forward. Even if they let go of other players, Camara feels like a perfect fit for any modern NBA team.

Splitter’s System Is Much Better With Camara

Any coach would love to have Toumani Camara on their roster. He fits the mold of a modern 3-and-D wing, but he goes the extra mile with his defensive playmaking. He has struggled with his shot, but he’s had impressive performances this season.

Camara’s defense is what makes him a high-level role player. He is on track to be a key figure in Blazers history as long as he maintains this level of play. With Lillard returning in the 2026-27 season, Camara could play some of his best basketball next to a top point guard.

In the past, Lillard thrived with lengthy wing defenders. Now that he will be playing with Camara, the Trail Blazers finally have the pieces around Lillard. Splitter’s system gets much better with Camara on the floor, and it will only get better with time.
