NBA star point guard Trae Young is eligible for a four-year, $229 million extension with the Atlanta Hawks this offseason.

However, Young and the Hawks haven’t had substantive extension talks, according to NBA insider Marc J. Spears of ESPN.

Young has spent his entire NBA career with the Hawks, who acquired Kristaps Porzingis from the Boston Celtics and signed Luke Kennard and Nickeil Alexander-Walker this offseason.

A four-time All-Star, Young averaged 24.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 11.6 assists for the Hawks last season while shooting 41.1% from the field, 34.0% from beyond the arc and 87.5% from the free-throw line. He was first in the NBA in assists and assists per game.

Young will make $45.9 million next season. He has a player option worth $48.9 million for the 2026-27 season.

One of the top scorers and passers in the NBA, Young led the Hawks to the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals. He has career averages of 25.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 9.8 assists.

The 26-year-old Young was linked to the Sacramento Kings before the Kings signed Dennis Schroder. According to NBA insider Sam Amick of The Athletic, Sacramento was not interested in trading for Young because of his style of play.

“Similarly, there was a push among some power-brokers for Sacramento to go after Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young, but league sources say the Kings didn’t have interest because of his style of play (offense-first) and cost (he’s extension-eligible this summer but is slated to earn $45.9 million next season and has a player option worth $48.9 million in 2026-27),” Amick wrote.

The Hawks haven’t made the playoffs since 2023. It will be intriguing to see how they play next season.
