One of the most humiliating experiences for casual ball players is getting shown up by someone elite on the court. There are many who move on the court with a false bravado during games, chirping and trash talking. It can often work against opponents of a certain caliber who don’t have a strong mental side to their games. But a random pickup baller trying it against Trae Young in a game setting was always disastrous.
The Atlanta Hawks point guard is possibly one of the worst NBA players for the average player to hoop against. He is fast, an unbelievable shooter against non-pro competitors and loves getting into it with hecklers. Trae Young is a complete package and incredibly hard to defend even for elite NBA defenders. So when he goes up against a regular Joe in a pickup game, the Joe doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell.
A famous video of a random heckler trash talking Trae Young and getting put in his place, from the 2022 offseason, went viral on social media recently. The footage shows a Skinz League hooper in Oklahoma City getting in the All-NBA point guard’s face and trying to instigate things. That was the worst mistake of his life, as Young made him regret his antics for the rest of the game, dropping a whopping 52 points.
Young revealed his thinking behind his emphatic response with a tweet today. He claims that what he did was just something he does in gyms, and not particularly driven by an urge to show his opponent his place:
I still don’t know why I told them kids to “guess” his name…& it wasn’t hostile, just another day in a packed gym!

& it wasn’t hostile, just another day in a packed gym!
The response clearly shows the unflappable mindset of Trae Young. For the opponent, it was the game of his life, but for a man who led the NBA in assists last year, it was just another day of his life.
There has been a major upheaval in the powers that are atop the Eastern Conference pyramid today. With Damian Lillard off the Bucks, Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton out for next year with Achilles tears and other contenders not capitalizing, there is a chance for many young teams to make a run next year. If the Hawks are able to pair Trae Young with a good supporting cast, they may go one step beyond 2021.
The Hawks already have Jalen Johnson to carry the scoring load off Young. Dyson Daniels has become a really good two-way player and has shown an ability to fashion his own shots off the dribble. Kristaps Porzingis has been added to the roster, while No. 1 pick Zacharie Risacher became a really good wing in the second half of 2024-25. There are a lot of interesting elements to this Hawks roster as it is currently constructed.
Trae Young and Porzingis, if fit next year, would present a nightmare pick-and-roll defensive scenario for the Hawks’ opponents. The Latvian has the ability to score from almost any spot on the roll, and can be a vertical spacer as well as a 3-point shooting menace alongside his mercurial teammate. With the other players on the roster pulling their weight, the Hawks can theoretically make the leap and be a top team in the East next year.
