Trae Young Injury News Comes With a Silver Lining

The Atlanta Hawks will be without star point guard Trae Young for a second straight game on Sunday when they face the Cleveland Cavaliers. The four-time All-Star suffered a knee injury on Wednesday, which forced him to exit their 117-112 win over the Brooklyn Nets. Young was unable to return to the game and was later diagnosed with a right knee sprain.

The 6-foot-1 guard has played five games so far this season, averaging 17.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 7.8 assists in 27.8 minutes per contest. Young has struggled with his shot, averaging just 37.1% from the field and 19.2% from three-point territory.

There has been considerable concern surrounding Young’s knee injury. The general belief was that it was going to be a lengthy spell on the sidelines for the 27-year-old, which was confirmed by a new report that surfaced on Saturday night.

ESPN’s NBA guru Shams Charania took to social media to share the latest on Young’s injury situation. Charania confirmed that Young will be out for at least one month.

“Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young sustained a sprained MCL in his right knee and will be re-evaluated in four weeks, sources tell ESPN,” Charania posted on X.

The latest news, however, comes with a silver lining. Charania’s report also indicates that Young underwent an MRI on Friday and that the doctors had some good news about the injury. The former fifth-overall pick has “dodged major structural damage in the knee.”

Young will not be able to return anytime soon, but the fact that there is no major damage bodes well for his comeback at some point in the season. It’s also a significantly positive development in terms of his long-term health.

For now, however, Atlanta will need to navigate the next month or so without their star point guard. They currently have a 3-3 record heading into Sunday’s matchup against the Cavs. It’s going to be a road game for the Hawks, with tipoff from Rocket Arena in Cleveland scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
