Trae Young is now Making Winning Plays on Defense
USA TODAY Sports

Trae Young is known as one of the best offensive playmakers in the NBA and he shows that in nearly every game. Last night might have been his best game of the season. Young dropped 45 points and 14 assists in the win over the San Antonio Spurs and the Hawks needed every bit of that. They were trailing by double-digits, but behind a 33-point half from Young, the Hawks were able to secure the win.

His offense was not the only impactful part of his game last night though. Young is criticized for his defense by many, but he has been much better on that end this season. He is getting steals and flying around, but last night after a Jeremy Sochan steal, he drew the game-winning charge and stepped up and made the play.

Hawks head coach Quin Snyder has heaped praise on Young for his defense this season and has talked about the narrative surrounding the Young and his defense:

The topic came up after the Hawks's loss to the Pacers earlier this year and  Snyder was quick to praise Young for his effort on that end:

"I am glad you asked me that, I have been saying it all year and its whatever... there is a narrative that develops about someone. He has been good off the ball, he has been good on the ball, he has competed, I can show you a long edit of the times that he has picked up full court and someone should talk about it. It's not... when you talk about Trae tonight, you will talk about what a great offensive game that he had and he did but it is one of the things that I have told him, even early in the year when his shots were not going in, he did not stop defending and that is good to see, from all of our guys. That is the mentality that we have to have and there are some things tonight that obviously defensively that we can do better and we played against a really good offensive team."

Young will not be an elite NBA defender, but he is making winning plays this season on that end of the floor and it deserves to be recognized.
