Trae Young stirs the pot, takes shot at New York Knicks fans

Trae Young has a history with both Oklahoma and New York City. He’s now weighing in on the two fanbases with a potential matchup looming in the NBA Finals.

Young tweeted a “hot take” out this evening after Oklahoma City advanced to the Western Conference Finals with a 125-93 win over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday. He posted that Thunder fans at the Paycom Center in OKC are a louder fanbase than the Knicks fans are at Madison Square Garden.

“Hot take but not..OKC fans are louder than Knick fans,” Young tweeted this evening. “Happy Sunday!”

There’s plenty of history here in this debate for Young. That’s continued from his high school and college career into his time with the Atlanta Hawks.

Young, a native of Norman, Oklahoma just a half hour outside of OKC, has seen firsthand what Thunder fans are capable of. Some of those OKC fans are still fans of his after his one-year career at Oklahoma, where he averaged 27.4 points and 8.7 assists as a Consensus All-American.

Then, through seven years in the NBA, Young has not been welcome in The Mecca. That’s after Young led the Hawks to a 4-1 series win over the Knicks in the opening round of the 2021 NBA Playoffs, en route to the Eastern Conference Finals. He has since averaged 25.5 points and 9.4 assists in a dozen regular-season games against New York.

Now, New York vs. Oklahoma City is a very real possibility for the 2025 NBA Finals. The Knicks advanced to their first appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals since the turn of the century by beating the Boston Celtics 4 games to 2. They now have a series against the Indiana Pacers with the winner going to the Finals. The Thunder then advanced to the Western Conference Finals with a 4-3 series win over the Denver Nuggets. A series with the Minnesota Timberwolves will then decide if they’ll be back in the Finals for the first time since 2012. With that, they now have homecourt advantage to start those respective series and are the favorites to win the NBA Finals.

Young is currently at home after four straight Play-In appearances, including the last two where the Hawks haven’t advanced. He’s still sticking it to the Knicks again, though, with this post today about the Thunder.
