The Atlanta Hawks missed the playoffs this season for the second year in a row, prompting principal owner Tony Ressler to make a major move.
On Monday, Ressler fired general manager Landry Fields, who joined the franchise in 2022.
“Every offseason we evaluate how we operate and ways we can improve our organization," Ressler said in a statement. "As we enter this pivotal offseason, we have several complex decisions ahead of us, and we are committed to providing the human and financial resources needed to ensure that we navigate these decisions with a high level of precision and foresight. Adding an accomplished, senior-level leader to provide strategic direction and structure as well as partnering with Onsi and our talented front office is a top priority.
“I would genuinely like to thank Landry for his leadership during his time with us. Landry made our franchise better and left contributions that have positioned us for growth. I am grateful for his dedication and wish him success in his next endeavor.”
The Hawks went 40-42 this season. The team's leading scorer was once again Trae Young, who averaged 24.2 points and 11.6 rebounds in 76 games.
Atlanta signed Young to a five-year, $215 million extension in 2021. Young will make $45.9 million next season, and according to NBA insider Chris Haynes, the All-Star would like to remain with the Hawks.
"He's down with the process," Haynes said on The Dan Patrick Show. "He wants to see this Atlanta Hawks squad turn the corner, and he wants to be a pivotal part in that."
Young has spent his entire career with the Hawks. The 26-year-old has career averages of 25.3 points and 9.8 assists. He led Atlanta to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021. The Milwaukee Bucks beat the Hawks in six games.
Young doesn't have a no-trade clause in his contract, so the Hawks can trade him without his consent.
It will be fascinating to see if the talented guard remains in Atlanta or is on a new team next season.
