Trendon Watford Embraces Opportunity and Support from Nets Coaching Staff
USA TODAY Sports

Having spent two seasons as a dependable part of the rotation for the Portland Trail Blazers, Trendon Watford has secured another opportunity with the Brooklyn Nets , where, although not utilized as extensively as his time with the Blazers, he expresses a strong affinity for playing under Jacque Vaughn and the coaching staff.

This is a good development and a solid mindset for Watford as he’s not receiving the minutes fans believe he deserves. However, he has shown that he wants to stay prepared to contribute.

“They're confident in me, they trust in me. JV, you know, he loves my game, so it's easy for me just to go out there and do what I love to do,” Watford said.

Watford’s potential role for Brooklyn

Watford is a dynamic player who can play as a power forward or a small-ball center. He has a unique skill set because he can dribble the ball like a guard and has the speed to use to get past bigger opponents.

He demonstrates a strong game sense, showcasing his timing in setting screens, executing precise dribble hand-offs, and exhibiting a delicate touch around the rim, particularly with his signature floater.

Watford can be a solid rotation big man for the Nets as he fits well as a backup power forward. They are currently running with Dorian Finney-Smith, Cameron Johnson, and Royce O’Neale as the forward rotation but Watford can easily slot into that. He can also provide small-ball center minutes to help out-speed the opposing big man.

The Next Man Up mentality

Despite not receiving the expected minutes from fans, Watford has stayed positive, and in recent games, he has been given sporadic minutes, hinting at a promising outlook for his future role.

With injuries to the team, Watford has remained ready to enter the game and make an immediate impact. Coach Jacque Vaughn trusts him to make the right play every time he’s on the floor, which Watford appreciates.

“I’m pretty comfortable around here now, starting to feel connected, more and more connected with the group. Just as time goes on, we’ll keep getting stronger and build chemistry together,” Watford said.

When his number is called, Watford aims to make an impact, showcasing his deserving minutes through a unique skill set and strong work ethic. Fortunately, the coaching staff is taking notice of his dedication and positive attitude.
