Veteran big man Blake Griffin expected to sign with Nets?

The Detroit Pistons reached a buyout agreement with Blake Griffin on Friday, making him a free agent. The Brooklyn Nets were considered the favorite to land the veteran big man, which remains the case.

According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Griffin is expected to sign with Nets to pursue a championship alongside Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden.

The Nets need some more help at the rim after parting ways with Jarrett Allen in the Harden trade, so a Griffin signing would not come as a surprise.

It's unclear what kind of deal Griffin will receive. However, the Nets can offer him more than the minimum salary if needed because they have the mid-level exception and a $5.7 million disabled player exception.

Griffin has not played since Feb. 12 because the Pistons were trying to trade him and wanted him to sit out to prevent injury. The 31-year-old is averaging 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game while shooting 36.5% from the field and 31.5% from deep.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat were also interested in signing Griffin.
