Some NBA players can fit into any offensive system. Their translatable skill sets allow them to provide value regardless of their roles or usage rate. Bogdan Bogdanovic is one of those players.
The 32-year-old shooting guard is a career 38% shooter from 3-point range. He's also highly valuable as a mid-range threat, especially when attacking close-outs off the dribble. His floor spacing could be invaluable to a contending team, especially one built around ball-dominant forwards.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Atlanta Hawks could be willing to discuss a trade for the veteran sniper ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline.
"There’s a growing sense that Hawks swingman Bogdan Bogdanovic could be traded ahead of the deadline, league sources told HoopsHype," Scotto wrote. "The Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat and other teams have expressed interest in trading for Bogdanovic, league sources told HoopsHype."
Bogdanovic is experiencing a down year. His overall production has slipped over the first half of the season, but if he can land on a contending roster, there's no reason to doubt his ability to bounce back with a renewed sense of purpose.
Despite his reputation as a consummate professional, Bogdanovic has never resided on a contending team. He spent the first five years of his career overseas. Since making his way to the NBA, he's played for the Hawks and Sacramento Kings. He's earned a shot at being a high-level role player on a contending roster.
Furthermore, Bogdanovic would undoubtedly get better shots when surrounded by high-caliber teammates. The additional gravity around him would mean less defensive pressure when he shoots off the catch or the bounce.
If Atlanta is serious about parting with its veteran shooting guard, it would likely receive a fair compensation package. Bogdanovic has another two years left on his $51.9 million deal, with the final year being a team option. That's good value for a near 40% career three-point shooter and could potentially be suitable for salary matching in the future.
Bogdanovic's move to a contending roster and proclamation that he can contribute to a winning organization will be fun, whether now or in the summer.
