San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama received a positive injury update on Jan. 1.
Wembanyama, 21, and the Spurs received positive news on Jan. 1. The 21-year-old suffered a leg injury during the Spurs’ 134-132 win over the New York Knicks on Dec. 31. Julian Champagnie stepped up to lead the Spurs with 36 points and six rebounds. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 29 points, four rebounds, and eight assists.
After Wednesday’s game, the French native told reporters that he hyperextended his knee and initially expected to play in the Spurs’ next game. Spurs fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. An MRI on Thursday showed that he didn’t suffer ligament damage to the left knee, which he hyperextended Wednesday in a win over the Knicks, league sources told ESPN.
The Frenchman didn’t travel with the team to Indianapolis, Indiana, for Friday’s game against the Indiana Pacers. Team officials wanted him to take advantage of the treatment options available at Victory Capital Performance Center, sources told ESPN.
When healthy, Wembanyama’s outlook is bright. In 2025-26, he’s averaging 24.3 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, along with 52.5% shooting from the field and 36.5% from the three-point range. He shoots effectively from both the floor and the wing.
The Spurs will likely defeat the Indiana Pacers, even without Wembanyama, on Friday night. Indiana’s record is just 4-16, primarily due to the team’s fall from grace after an appearance in the 2025 NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Injuries, internal disputes, defensive issues, and inconsistent play have been affecting the Pacers. The Spurs’ strong performance, No. 8 ranking in offensive rating, and all-around offensive talent can lead to a road win in Indianapolis.
