Victor Wembanyama and Giannis Antetokounmpo had a spectacular first meeting in the NBA on Thursday night. After the game ended, though, Wembanyama went viral for leaving Antetokounmpo hanging.
It could just very well be that the Frenchman didn't see Giannis. Wembanyama was heading toward one of the officials to presumably speak about an illegal inbound call that was made against the San Antonio Spurs earlier. It could also, of course, be that he was just frustrated to lose yet again, especially after he played so well.
Wembanyama had 27 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 5 blocks on the night, but was unable to prevent the Spurs from losing their fourth straight game. They ended up losing 125-121 to fall to 5-29 on the season.
As for the Milwaukee Bucks, Giannis led the way with a game-high 44 points to go with 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. He scored 14 points in the fourth quarter alone to ensure the Bucks improved to 25-10.
This was the second meeting between the Spurs and Bucks this season, but Wembanyama missed the first one due to an ankle problem. So, Giannis was asked about his first impressions of Wembanyama after the game, and he was very complimentary.
"He's special, he's going to be an extremely good player," Giannis said. "Gotta stay healthy. He plays the right way, plays to win. I don't know but, I've never seen anything like him. 7'4", 7'5" I don't know how tall he is. He's not 7'3'', he's way taller than 7'3". So, whoever says he's 7'3'', that’s a lie... The sky is the limit as long as you work hard, keep on having a positive attitude and energy towards the game, everything he dreams of is going to happen for him."
(starts at 2:28 mark):
From all that we have seen and read about Wembanyama, he has the mindset one needs to be successful in the NBA. The only thing that could stand between him and greatness is health.
Even in this game, Wembanyama was on a minutes restriction due to his ankle injury. Some sort of injuries seem inevitable considering the 20-year-old's frame but if he can avoid any serious ones, he is going to be a superstar in the NBA.
As a rookie, he is averaging 19.2 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.2 blocks per game. The only negative about the season for Wembanyama would be that the Spurs continue to struggle to win games despite his displays.
Wembanyama may or may not have intentionally left Giannis hanging, but during his post-game interview, he praised the Bucks superstar. The Frenchman wants to be the bad guy on the court, though.
"Somebody I grew up watching and one of the greatest players in the world," Wembanyama said. "So, it's always extra motivation. I know I'm a competitor. So, I want to go at everyone and be the bad guy on the court. It was a great matchup."
(starts at 1:35 mark):
It was certainly a great matchup and it's a shame we won't get to see these two play against each other again this season. It was really a spectacle and hopefully, we'll see many more epic battles between them on the court in the years to come.
