Victor Wembanyama’s interviews may be few and far between this season.
The San Antonio Spurs center Wembanyama is “locked in” after losing in the NBA Finals last season, Michael C. Wright of ESPN reported on Tuesday. To that effect, Wright adds that Wembanyama will not even be talking to any American media outlets other than “60 Minutes.”
Wembanyama, a native of France, is still doing his required media availabilities like usual and recently even made headlines for his strong opinions about sports betting sponsorships in the NBA. As such, Wembanyama’s stiff-arm to the American media only appears to apply to off-the-court interviews and features.
Still only 22 years old, Wembanyama is about to enter his fourth NBA season. He averaged a stout 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game last year and ended up earning All-Star, All-NBA First Team, and Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Wembanyama also led San Antonio to a 62-win season (their most since 2016) and an NBA Finals berth (their first since 2014). But the Spurs would ultimately lose in five games to the New York Knicks, and Wembanyama committed some unsightly blunders along the way.
The 7-foot-4 Wembanyama became something of a villain during San Antonio’s Finals run due to his own childish behavior (some of which was aimed at the press). Now Wembanyama is making sure to drastically reduce his media footprint heading into the 2026-27 NBA season.
