Victor Wembanyama Just Announced The NBA Is His

The Western Conference Finals were already supposed to be must-watch basketball.

Then the NBA accidentally created the perfect villain origin story for Victor Wembanyama.

Right before Game 1 tipped off, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was officially presented with the 2026 NBA MVP award in front of the Oklahoma City crowd. The Thunder celebrated. Fans exploded. Cameras flashed everywhere.

And on the other sideline?

Victor Wembanyama watched the whole thing.

Then he went out and completely destroyed Oklahoma City in a stunning 122-115 Spurs overtime win to steal Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. Wemby dropped an absurd 41 points, 24 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 9 offensive rebounds while playing 49 minutes in one of the greatest playoff performances of his career.

It honestly felt personal.

This was not just some random upset either. These were the two best teams in basketball all season long. Oklahoma City won 64 games. San Antonio won 62. This was a heavyweight fight between two future dynasties, and Game 1 immediately delivered chaos.

And Wembanyama completely owned the night.

Every time the Thunder tried to take control, Wemby answered. He dominated inside, destroyed OKC on the glass, got to the free throw line constantly, and completely controlled overtime like a veteran superstar. The Thunder genuinely had no answer for him once the game tightened up late.

Meanwhile, Shai struggled badly.

The newly crowned MVP finished with 24 points and 12 assists, but shot just 7-for-23 from the field and finished with a -15 plus-minus. Jalen Williams scored 26, while Alex Caruso exploded for 31 points off the bench, but none of it mattered because Wembanyama simply looked like the best player on the planet.

And that is the scary part for the NBA.

Wembanyama is only getting started.

The Spurs’ young core looked phenomenal around him too. Dylan Harper had 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 steals in one of the biggest games of his rookie season. Stephon Castle added 17 points and 11 assists. San Antonio looked fearless in one of the toughest road environments in basketball.

That is not normal for a young team.

Most teams this inexperienced are supposed to be happy just reaching the conference finals. Instead, the Spurs walked into Oklahoma City against a 64-win Thunder team and stole home court immediately.

Now the pressure completely flips to OKC.

Because if the Thunder lose Game 2 at home, this series suddenly becomes a nightmare scenario. And psychologically, this opener felt massive. Shai had the MVP moment before the game, but by the end of the night, everyone was talking about Wembanyama.

That is what superstars do.

Moments like this are how legends are built.

The NBA spent all season debating whether Shai or Jokic deserved MVP. Meanwhile, Wembanyama might have used the entire conversation as motivation.

Because after watching Game 1, it honestly looked like Wemby believes the league already belongs to him.

And the terrifying part is he may be right.
