Victor Wembanyama's latest history-making feat a nod to his IQ

It's becoming customary for Victor Wembanyama to roll out of bed and put up a "first-time ever" stat line, especially due to the combined prowess of his shot-blocking and three-point shooting.

But when Wemby puts up triple-doubles with assists — he already has one of those with blocks — he shows a cerebral side that often goes unnoticed. During Sunday's win over the Kings, the Frenchman recorded a career-high 11 assists, with four of those dimes coming in the fourth quarter. Wembanyama noticeably went to the post a lot in the game and found cutters and spot-up shooters for timely baskets.

There was one specific play that highlighted his court vision. With 9:35 left in the third, Wembanyama was doubled in the post with two swarming defenders in his vicinity. The big man had the wherewithal to find Stephon Castle for a corner three by passing over four defenders. With 2:49 left in the game, he similarly found Devin Vassell for a three while surrounded by a sea of Kings jerseys.

Wemby's dime-dropping allowed him to make history on several counts on Sunday. He became the youngest player in NBA history with a 30-point triple-double, and just the fourth Spur with the stat line, joining David Robinson, Dejounte Murray and Alvin Robertson. Furthermore, he became just the third player after James Harden and Vince Carter to tally five threes and three blocks in a 30-point triple-double.

Wembanyama also became the first Spur to make five threes in a triple-double performance, joining DeMarcus Cousins as the only centers to produce such numbers in a single game, per ESPN Stats & Info.

While Sunday's game marked only his third career triple-double, Wemby's ability to pass, especially out of the post, shows he will likely register many 10-assist nights. Most importantly, Wembanyama's improvement as a passer is the attribute that could turn the Spurs from a fun team to watch into one that wins consistently.

The Spurs (11-9) are locked in a tight battle for one of the play-in spots in the West, a year after winning just 22 games.
