Jonathan Kuminga was moved to the bench on Wednesday as the Golden State Warriors took on the San Antonio Spurs in a road game at Frost Bank Center. Head coach Steve Kerr’s decision to make changes to his starting lineup paid dividends as the Warriors secured a 125-120 win over Victor Wembanyama and Co. It was a much-needed victory for Golden State as it marked its first road win following a six-game losing streak away from home.
Kuminga, however, was forced to exit Wednesday’s contest. The 23-year-old headed to the locker room in the first half due to a knee injury and was unable to return. The Warriors have now announced an update on the status of the 6-foot-8 forward.
Kuminga has been a key piece for the Warriors this season. He’s played in all 13 games thus far, starting 12 of them. During that stretch, Kuminga has produced averages of 13.8 points on 47.8% shooting, 6.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 27.7 minutes per contest.
Unfortunately, Kuminga is now in serious danger of missing his first game of the season. On Thursday, the Warriors announced via the official injury report that the former NBA G League star is questionable to play on Friday in a rematch against the Spurs due to bilateral knee patellar tendonitis.
It is worth noting that Kerr already announced after Wednesday’s win that he intends to use the same starting lineup for Friday’s game. Moses Moody and rookie Will Richard were inserted into the starting five with Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski heading to the bench.
This only means that if he is cleared to play, Kuminga will come off the bench again on Friday against the Spurs. However, if he is unable to go, Moody should see an increase in his playing time. Buddy Hield will also be a candidate for a bigger role.
The Warriors improved to 7-6 after Wednesday’s victory. They will be looking to keep their foot on the gas and make it back-to-back wins on Friday. That will be Golden State’s third contest in its current six-game road trip.
