The Golden State Warriors have fallen to 36-39 on the NBA season, and have clinched their spot in the Play-In Tournament. With the LA Clippers having won five straight games, Golden State now trails its Pacific Division rivals by three games for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, making it increasingly likely the Warriors will finish ninth or 10th.
As they prepare for their third straight Play-In Tournament appearance, the Warriors face a lot of roster uncertainty. Steph Curry is still sidelined with a knee injury that head coach Steve Kerr recently admitted the team is running out of time to get him back from ( via Anthony Slater of ESPN).
Amid Curry's uncertain status, the Warriors have also lost Moses Moody for the season. He suffered a torn left patellar tendon in Golden State's win over the Dallas Mavericks last week, and has already undergone season-ending surgery. Reflecting on this in an Instagram post, Moody shared a message to his 255,000 followers on Sunday.
"I appreciate all of the love," he wrote. "Every challenge I’ve been through in life I’m glad I went through. I’m sure I’ll feel the same about this."
His post received several comments, including one from Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski who dropped a "❤️" emoji that has since tallied over 1,110 likes.
Podziemski is one of the players who will need to step up in Moody's absence, and especially with Curry still sidelined. In the three games since Moody went down, Podziemski has averaged 33.3 minutes per game. His scoring has been up to 22.3 points and he is pulling down 7.0 rebounds while dishing out 4.7 assists.
As for Moody, his year ends after 60 games (39 starts) in which he averaged a career-high 12.1 points on a much-improved 40.1 percent from 3-point range. For a Warriors team low on shooting, his play on the wing will be missed.
As things sit currently, the Warriors are looking at a Play-In game against the Portland Trail Blazers. The winner of that game would play the loser of the Clippers vs. Phoenix Suns for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference playoff bracket.
Golden State was able to come out of the Play-In Tournament last season as the seventh seed, and defeated the No. 2 seeded Houston Rockets in the first round. A similar upset this season would be even more challenging as the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs look to be a tier above everyone else in the West.
