Warriors Get Good News After Steph Curry Thumb Injury Scare

At this time of year, one of the biggest fears any coach has is the possibility that their star player will get injured just as the playoffs are looming. And when it comes to teams fighting for playoff position while simultaneously being absolutely unable to lose a key player, the Warriors--and star Stephen Curry--are right at the top of the list.

So it does not take much to imagine the panic that set in on Friday night for the Warriors and their faithful in a key game on the road against the lottery-bound Trail Blazers when Steph Curry had to be removed in the first half with a thumb injury after he banged it against the knee of Portland defender Justin Minaya.

Curry has dealt with issues to his right thumb all season.

Crisis averted, though. Curry returned to the game with 8:02 to play in the second quarter and, a little more than a minute later, sank a 29-foot 3-pointer. He did have his thumb awkwardly taped, however.

No one knows quite how devastating the notion of losing Curry for the playoffs would be. As it stands, the Warriors are fighting to stay in the Top 6 playoff picture and avoid hitting the play-in tournament in the West. If they win both of their remaining games, they will avoid the play-in.

Kerr said this week that he agrees with the notion that  Curry should be in the conversation for the greatest player in league history.

“He broke barriers, he changed the game," Kerr said. "And what he does, really to this day, is unique to himself. I just can’t even imagine anybody doing the stuff he does. It’s different; the way he impacts the game is different. ...

"Steph doesn’t fit that normal mold. I love that Shaq (O'Neal) is bringing that up because, from a skills standpoint, it’s not even close. [Curry] is the greatest ever from a skills standpoint.”
