Before the start of the 2025-26 season, Golden State Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski went viral for something he said about Stephen Curry. During the team's training camp, Podziemski was asked about the greatness of the franchise star. According to the younger guard, not everyone wants to be as great as Curry.
After his answer, there was a follow-up question, which was about whether he wants to be as great as the four-time champion. Podziemski said that he wants to be a better player than the Warriors star and maximize his talent in the league.
Fans didn't like his response, especially considering how he's played this season. Through 73 games, the backup guard has averaged 13.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Additionally, he told the media that he could be a household name for the Warriors.
On Thursday, he appeared as a guest on 95.7 The Game and said that what he said about being a household name was taken out of context.
“I think I could have worded them a little bit differently, but I also think how it’s perceived on the internet is a little taken out of context,” Podziemski said.

Brandin Podziemski elaborated on some of his viral comments, including saying he wants to be better than Steph Curry pic.twitter.com/nYWlDPJ0QB
Podziemski said that he's aware of the pushback from fans since he said that. However, he said that he's going to stick to what he said. When his comments about being better than Curry was mentioned, he said this:
“I think with that it’s just something you strive for, seeing the greatest player at the point guard position, the same position you are. If you have the opportunity to be better than him, obviously anybody would and I think that’s where I was going with that, not that I’m going to be better than him. Just that if I can be, obviously, I would.”
Podziemski hasn't shown promise as a potential star for the Warriors. However, his increased minutes due to Curry's prolonged absence have helped him average more points.
In March, the former Santa Clara guard has played in 13 games, averaging 16.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists on 37.5% shooting from deep. He's also had five games where he scored at least 20 points.
Without Curry, the Warriors guard has stepped up his game and is making the most of his increased playing time. In their previous back-to-back win, Podziemski put up 42 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists.
