Kelly Oubre Jr. had a difficult first season with the Golden State Warriors. He was very inconsistent and shot just 31.6% from deep, his worst three-point percentage since his rookie campaign. However, the 25-year-old has reportedly set some lofty contract expectations entering free agency this offseason.
Oubre is reportedly confident he can earn $20 million per season on his next contract, which he hopes will be a long-term deal, Michael Scotto said on the HoopsHype podcast. While Golden State is willing to keep him, the $20 million price point might be a little high for the Warriors, Scotto adds.
The Warriors already have one of the most expensive rosters in the league, with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins making at least $24 million. If they keep Oubre at $20 million per season, there might not be much room to upgrade elsewhere.
Golden State could wait and see what happens with Oubre on the open market. If the Kansas product doesn't garner the interest he expects, then the Warriors may be able to swoop in and sign him for a lower price.
Oubre was on a two-year $30 million deal, and $15 million per season might be more reasonable than the $20 million he's seeking given his disappointing 2020-21 performance.
