Warriors lock up HC Steve Kerr with lucrative two-year extension

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Golden State Warriors and Steve Kerr have agreed to a two-year, $35M contract extension. The deal makes Kerr the highest-paid head coach in NBA history.

Per Wojnarowski, the extension comes after "months" of talks between Kerr's representation and Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr.

"Securing Kerr to remain with Dunleavy Jr. to lead the organization has been a priority of owner Joe Lacob," Wojnarowski wrote. "The Warriors never reached an extension with former president and GM Bob Myers, who exited at the end of the 2023 season."

While the move solidifies the Warriors' brass, at least for the next two seasons, it also lines up with the remaining years on star point guard Stephen Curry's contract, as Anthony Slater of The Athletic pointed out. Curry inked a four-year, $215.3M deal in 2022, which ends, like Kerr's, after the 2025-26 campaign.

Kerr certainly has the resume to warrant a lucrative extension. However, things haven't gone well for the Warriors this season. Entering play Friday, they were 28-26, holding onto the 10th seed in the Western Conference. While they've won two straight and nine of the last 11, Golden State has been overwhelming at best, with even Curry calling the team "very average" recently.

Five players on the Warriors roster are over 30, including the majority of the team's core, like Curry (35), Draymond Green (33), Klay Thompson (34) and Chris Paul (38).

With this year's group heating up, there's still time to salvage this season. However, despite having Curry and now Kerr locked up for the next two seasons, time is ultimately ticking for the Warriors we all know.
