The Golden State Warriors finally know who's going to be calling the shots from the sidelines.
Following weeks of speculation, Steve Kerr agreed to a two-year contract to return as their coach.
Now, they need a little help from the basketball gods, as they enter the NBA Draft Lottery with a 9.4% chance at rising into the top four and a 2% chance at the No. 1 pick.
Notably, Warriors insider Danny Emerman of the San Francisco Standard claimed the Warriors might look to trade their first-round pick to land someone who can help them win now.
“Golden State could also consider flipping the pick in a blockbuster trade for a proven star. A top-four pick would instantly become both the franchise’s juiciest trade asset and its best chance at bridging the end of this era with whatever comes next. Choose your own adventure,” wrote Emerman.
Ironically, the Warriors have been reluctant to trade young players and/or first-round picks for most of Mike Dunleavy Jr.'s tenure as general manager.
Now, facing one of the most promising and stacked draft classes in years, they might be ready to pull the trigger.
Stephen Curry is still one of the best players in the game, but he's not getting any younger, and he dealt with multiple injuries last season.
As such, the Warriors have to realize that the clock is ticking, and they can't afford to wait for anybody or develop raw players.
Whatever the case, the Warriors' attempt to stay competitive in the present while preparing for the future looks like a failure. They haven't been a contender, and they don't seem to have any young players who may carry the torch for the post-Curry era.
Will their luck finally change in the 2026 NBA Draft? We shall wait and see.
