Warriors predicted to part ways with Draymond Green

Once again, the Golden State Warriors went big-name hunting and wound up empty-handed.

Not only did they fail to sign LeBron James, but they haven't even added any outside free agents yet this offseason. It's been so bad that it's even prompted some speculation about Stephen Curry's future with the organization.

Nevertheless, Marcus Thompson of The Athletic thinks another team legend will be shown the door at some point this season. 

In an appearance on the "Plus Minus" podcast, he predicted the Warriors would finally move on from Draymond Green. 

This might be the end of the Draymond Green era in the Bay Area

“It’s probably six months left for the Draymond Green era,” Thompson said. “He’s on a one-year deal, $27.8 million, and doesn’t have a no-trade clause, so that’s a very tradable contract. It felt like this has been coming for a while, but this, the way (Warriors GM) Dunleavy was talking, and the way they positioned it, this feels like 'Alright, let's see where we are in February because if we're not where we need to be, then we're just going to start selling pieces off and starting over.” 

Of course, this isn't the first time that Green has been tangled up in this type of rumor.

Multiple reports indicated that the Warriors considered trading him as part of a package for Giannis Antetokounmpo before they also missed out on the Greek superstar.

The Warriors did right by Green by giving him a big, albeit short-term, contract after they didn't get LeBron, but the fact that they didn't give him a no-trade clause also raised some eyebrows.

Even Green himself addressed that issue on his podcast, stating that he didn't want to fight over a no-trade clause because he wouldn't want to stay unless they truly wanted him there.

“I think if the Warriors want to trade me at some point in the season, they want to trade me. I’ve never been a guy who wants to stay somewhere where I’m not wanted,” Green said.

Green has done more than enough to retire as a Warrior, with his jersey retired and a statue outside the arena.

That said, this is a cruel business, and the Warriors must do whatever is best for the greatest player in franchise history. If moving Green is the only way to finally get Curry some help, that's a conversation worth having.
