SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden State Warriors agreed to trade forward Jonathan Kuminga and guard Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks for veteran center Kristaps Porzingis. The Warriors then traded Trayce Jackson-Davis to the Raptors for a second-round pick via the Los Angeles Lakers.
Warriors Swap Jonathan Kuminga For Kristaps Porzingis In Deadline Trade; Send Trayce Jackson-Davis To The Raptors In Other
This move unofficially ends the Warriors’ pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo until the offseason and closes the chapter on Kuminga’s five-season roller-coaster tenure in Golden State. The Warriors made several offers over the past week but pivoted after realizing Milwaukee will not trade Giannis at the deadline. The Bucks prefer to wait until summer, when more teams will have assets and the draft order will be known.
Porzingis has been on the Warriors’ radar since his playoff runs with Boston. They have searched for a rim-protecting center who can shoot threes and believe Porzingis fits well next to Draymond Green. The pairing mirrors Green and Al Horford, but younger and more dynamic. This move also signals that the Warriors will not trade Green, despite recent speculation. It’s noteworthy that 2023-24 champions with Boston, Horford and Porzingis will reunite to recreate some of that magic in San Francisco.
Porzingis arrives with availability concerns. He has battled postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which limited him to 17 games with the Hawks this season after just 42 with the Celtics last year. He has not played since January 7, but the team hopes to have him back soon.
This trade marks the end of the Jonathan Kuminga era on the Warriors. The partnership delivered more in rumors than on-court output. Steve Kerr’s lack of trust strained the relationship until it reached its logical conclusion. With the Hawks, Jonathan Kuminga gets a fresh chance to rebuild his trade value and confidence ahead of his 2027 free agency.
The Warriors also traded Trayce Jackson-Davis to Toronto Raptors for a 2026 second-round pick via Los Angeles on Wednesday night. Jackson-Davis averaged 4.2 points and 3.1 rebounds this season. The move opens a roster spot that the Warriors could use to convert two-way guard Pat Spencer.
