Warriors Reportedly Back in Contract Talks With Jonathan Kuminga

The Golden State Warriors have not had an agreement on a contract with free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga. While they are willing to offer him a deal, the young player thinks he deserves more. The latest offer they gave Kuminga was a four-year, $45 million contract, which he declined.

The 22-year-old believes he deserves a $30 million per year contract. Additionally, San Francisco Chronicle's Ron Kroichick reported that Kuminga believes he's at the same level as All-Stars Cade Cunningham and Scottie Barnes.

Last offseason, Cunningham signed a five-year, $224 million extension with the Detroit Pistons. Barnes also signed a five-year, $225 million deal with the Toronto Raptors. However, the fact that both players had been All-Stars is one of the reasons they were granted maximum contract extensions. Kuminga, on the other hand, has not reached that level.

Kuminga Still Wants a Player-Friendly Contract From the Warriors

Even though Kuminga hasn't reached the same level as Cunningham and Barnes, he still believes that he deserves a team-friendly deal. According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, the two sides have renewed conversations regarding a contract in the past few days.

“Well, there’s been renewed conversations between the two sides,” Slater said.“There’s dialogue, but as you all know, talking doesn’t necessarily equal movement. They’ve shared contract concepts and opinions about the whole thing between each other this last week, dating back to last weekend. Kuminga wants more of a player-friendly deal, more of a signal that he’s a building block, not a trade asset.”

To find a trade partner for Kuminga, the Warriors are looking for a team-friendly alternative. But that has proven to be a daunting task since the free agent forward wasn't interested in what they offered him the last time.
