Warriors, Stephen Curry expected to start negotiating extension

Stephen Curry and the Warriors are expected to start discussing a contract extension as soon as one can happen, according to ESPN’s Anthony Slater.

Curry becomes eligible on Saturday and can sign for up to two years and $137 million. Curry is 38, but as you know, still incredibly impactful. The fact he remains the best player on the Warriors tells you a lot about both Curry’s greatness and the Warriors’ ineptitude in finding him real help.

As an aside, Golden State could create real cap space next summer by not signing Curry to an extension, as well as letting Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler walk. Both Green and Butler are already on expiring deals. 

While it’s doubtful the Warriors would ever trade Green, they certainly seem open to the idea on Butler — who’s likely out until at least January after undergoing knee surgery.

As for Curry, well, they’ll likely keep paying him until he decides he’s hanging ’em up. So expect the contract extension to come your way soon.
