Draymond Green did not hold back after the Golden State Warriors’ 126-102 loss to the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, on Tuesday. That marked the Warriors’ sixth consecutive road loss, which resulted in Golden State falling to 6-6 on the season.
After the blowout loss to Oklahoma City, Green was asked about his teammates’ “personal agenda.” This led to the former Defensive Player of the Year admitting that these agendas may be getting in the way of the Warriors’ commitment to winning. Head coach Steve Kerr caught wind of Green’s strong statement, and the four-time NBA champion coach has responded to the veteran’s public call-out.
In his postgame comments, Green stated that he does not feel like his teammates are “committed to winning,” at least not at the same level as they were in the second half of last season. The four-time All-Star acknowledged that everyone in the NBA has a personal agenda, but he stated that these should “work in the team confines.” The 35-year-old warned that if these agendas become too big a distraction, it could be the “cause of someone getting rid of you.”
Kerr was a guest on the “Willard & Dibs” podcast on Thursday and was asked to share his thoughts on Green’s comments. Kerr had nothing but high praise for the veteran, explaining that Green’s public call-out was previously discussed internally.
"Draymond is our emotional and spiritual leader,” Kerr said, via 95.7 The Game. “When he says stuff like that, it's good for us...Draymond always has his finger on the pulse of what's going on with the team. He can be dramatic in the way he expresses it like he was the other night, but it's good for us. He needed to put our team on edge.
“It wasn't just a few comments to the media. Draymond has addressed the group a couple of times over the last week, so we're already on this and Draymond is on it.
“If he says it to the media, there's method to his madness. He knows the rest of the guys are going to see it and he wants them to see it."
Green has been with the Warriors throughout Kerr’s entire tenure with the team. Kerr took on the role of head coach in 2014. Green is currently in his 12th season under Kerr.
As Kerr said, Green is the team’s talisman. The Warriors coach has backed his player after Green called out his teammates, with Kerr even stating that it was necessary.
Golden State got back to winning ways one day after Green’s public statement. They secured their first road victory in seven games with a 125-120 win against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.
The Warriors are back in action on Friday in a rematch against Victor Wembanyama and Co. as they look to make it back-to-back wins.
