The Washington Wizards entered the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery with the second-best odds to land the top overall pick of this summer’s draft after finishing the regular season with the league’s second-worst record at 18-64.
However, the Washington Wizards fell to sixth instead of having a Top 3 pick, much to their fans’ dismay. They also have the 18th overall pick, which the team acquired in the Marcus Smart trade last February.
Last year, Washington had the second overall pick and used it to take Alex Sarr. The team also acquired Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George with the 14th and 24th overall picks via trade with the Portland Trail Blazers and New York Knicks.
The Washington Wizards have slowly built an intriguing young core with Sarr, Carrington, George, Jordan Poole, Corey Kispert , and Bilal Coulibaly. However, the jury’s still out on whether they can compete in the Eastern Conference.
Washington Wizards general manager Will Dawkins promised the fans that the front office will do its due diligence to pick the right players in the upcoming NBA Draft. Most mock drafts have the team taking Tre Johnson, an explosive scoring guard from Texas, with the sixth overall pick.
“We’re going to continue to build through the draft and be strategic… This is just a different player that we’ll have an opportunity to land,” Dawkins said.
“We’ll find a player that fits for us and melts with our other pieces pretty well,” he concluded.
