In a game that won’t shake up the Eastern Conference standings, the Washington Wizards handily defeated the Indiana Pacers to win their second straight game. This game represented the second of a two-game series between these two teams.
Although the star players for both the Wizards and Pacers didn’t suit up in this game, you wouldn’t have guessed that based on the play of each squad. The team-play approach of each team led to a fantastic amount of offensive production from almost everyone. The Wizards saw 8 players score in double figures, and the Pacers had 6 score over 10 points in the game.
The biggest star for the Wizards in this game was recently signed shooting guard Alondes Williams, who made a great first impression for Washington tonight. Williams was signed to a 10-day contract on Monday after spending the majority of the season with the Wizards’ G League affiliate team, the Capital City Go-Go. The NBA journeyman dropped 25 points and 10 rebounds in just 29 minutes of play.
Washington was able to get whatever they wanted on the offensive end of the floor, as they shot a blisteringly efficient 58% from the floor in the game. The Wizards also dominated the Pacers in the paint, where they outscored Indiana 78-46 in one of the more impressive interior scoring performances put on by any team. The only area the Wizards struggled in on offense was from the three-point line, as they only shot 20% from beyond the arc tonight.
It’s almost always a guarantee that a team will lose without 4 of their 5 starters out with injury, but the Pacers found a way to at least make it a game despite the adversity. Indiana held a small but firm lead over the Wizards for the majority of the game before Washington scored 39 points in the 4th quarter to pull away from Indiana.
If the Pacers had their All-Star forward, Pascal Siakam, the outcome may have turned in Indiana’s favor tonight.
Despite the loss, there were a few noteworthy performances in the game for the Pacers from players such as Jay Huff, Quenton Jackson, and Micah Potter. These players combined for 61 of the Pacers’ 118 total points, with Huff leading the way with 22 points on offense for Indiana. The Pacers also doubled up on the Wizards from the three-point line as they knocked down 18 threes, with Potter accounting for 4 of those triples in an impressive performance from the former G-Leaguer.
Although tanking has become a hot-button issue in the NBA over the past few years, you wouldn’t have guessed it between these two teams tonight. That’s been especially the case for Washington during the last month, as they’ve picked up 4 wins in February, a mark they last hit at the beginning of the season.
While some Washington fans would rather their team tank to try to snag a higher draft position, this recent stretch of games has been an encouraging sight from a franchise that’s seemingly stuck in an endless rebuild.
This win does hurt the Wizards’ chances at potentially acquiring the top overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. They now have just a 12.5% chance to get the top spot. However, Washington is still projected to get a top 5 position in the draft, with the lottery field looking to be one of the most loaded classes ever, with plenty of highly touted prospects expected to be on the board for teams to choose from.
