Watch: Pat Riley's Reaction After Miami Heat Drafts Kasparas Jakucionis

Kasparas Jakucionis, seen as a top-12 lock before the draft, unexpectedly tumbled down the board on Wednesday. Still, the Miami Heat were quick to pounce at No. 20. His slide proved to be Miami’s gain in what could be a mutually beneficial pairing.

Heat president Pat Riley couldn’t contain his excitement after his team secured Jakucionis. He jumped up and started pointing at everyone in the war room as soon as the Heat’s pick was announced.

After missing out on Kevin Durant, the Heat needed a win on draft night, and they got it with Jakucionis. The selection used on Jakucionis likely would’ve gone to Phoenix in a Durant deal, making it all the sweeter. If nothing else, it’s proof that having a solid contingency plan can pay off in a big way.

Originally from Lithuania, Jakucionis made a strong impression during his freshman year at Illinois. He averaged 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists while helping lead the team to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.

Jakucionis seemed destined for a top-five pick at one point. Scouts were amazed by his passing vision and scoring ability. But a prolonged injury layoff in the second of the season, made him fall out of the radar a bit.

On paper, the Heat looks like the perfect landing spot for Jakucionis. He is an excellent playmaker who should fit right into Erik Spoelstra’s fluid gameplay.
