Sebastian Telfair is preparing to serve six months in prison but is hoping for some help from President Donald Trump. Telfair was among the former NBA players who were charged in 2021 with defrauding the NBA’s Health and Welfare Benefit Plan of approximately $358,000 in fake medical and dental claims. The former first-round pick was initially given a three-year suspended sentence that involved supervised release. But he violated the terms of his suspended sentence, which led to him being sentenced in June to six months in prison. Telfair was getting ready to report to prison and pleaded for the president to step in and pardon him. “Trump, go check in on my story and you’re definitely going to want to pardon me. You’ll hold me accountable and want me to continue to go do good. But I did too good to being sending anybody to jail,” Telfair argued in comments to a reporter from TMZ. Telfair contends that his recent issue is due to a paperwork problem. He feels the resulting sentence he’s received is “super unfair.” Whether President Trump is able to hear his case and pardon him remains to be seen, but Telfair is definitely trying. Telfair, 40, is from Brooklyn, N.Y., and developed a big following as a teenager due to his strong basketball play. He was the No. 13 overall pick in 2004 by Portland and began his career with them as a 19-year-old straight out of high school. Telfair played 10 seasons in the NBA and spent time with eight different teams. He averaged 7.4 points and 3.5 assists per game during his career.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a ton of excitement surrounding the team as it gets ready for the 2025 regular season. There has been turnover all throughout the roster on both sides of the ball, and the ceiling for the team is fairly high. Some believe the team has what it takes to be legitimate contenders in the AFC, while other fans are a little more skeptical as a ton of change in one offseason doesn't usually pan out well. Pittsburgh is relying heavily on 41-year old quarterback Aaron Rodgers on offense, while the defense has also made some interesting changes. Pittsburgh parted ways with long-time free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick as he was traded back to the Miami Dolphins, and Pittsburgh was able to bring in future Hall of Famer Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey solidifies the secondary as he is expected to be very versatile, as does Darius Slay who will be lining up on the outside. Those two additions, plus an impressive rookie class with Derrick Harmon, Yahya Black, and Jack Sawyer should allow the defense to take a step forward in 2025. Head Coach Mike Tomlin has openly discussed how good his defense could be, which is not something he often does when speaking on the outlook of a season. Former NFL General Manager Doug Whaley joined 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday morning and shared his thoughts on what Tomlin had to say. "I like it, especially if you're talking about your head coach waxing poetically about the ceiling of the defense," Whaley said. "The one thing I look at, and it's great, he is basically assigning accountability to himself and his coaching staff. If I'm Teryl Austin, I'm on notice now that he's basically saying, 'We got the talent, now it's up to us to make sure this defense reaches the levels that we think and everybody's saying that it can!'" Whaley makes an interesting point. Tomlin has acknowledged the amount of talent his defense has at all three levels, so there is essentially no excuse for underwhelming play from the unit. It will come down to coaching and execution, but Tomlin and Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin are going to face a lot of scrutiny if the defense does not meet or surpass expectations. Pittsburgh made a ton of exciting additions to the defense, but the organization is also relying on some players to take some meaningful steps forward. This includes young players like Joey Porter Jr., Payton Wilson, Nick Herbig, and Keeanu Benton. Patrick Queen is another player that needs to improve on what he did in 2024. He was named an All-Pro in 2023 while he was with the Baltimore Ravens, and Pittsburgh would like to see him get back to that level of play. The success of the defense is also going to rely upon the offense putting them in positions to succeed. This means less slow starts, being able to gain a couple first downs consistently on possessions, and limiting turnovers. Steelers Need To Come To A Solution With Cam Heyward A big piece of the defense is veteran Cam Heyward, who is currently holding-in as he is looking for his contract to be restructured in a way that reflects his high-level performance in 2024. He was an All-Pro at the age of 35, and he would like a raise. Pittsburgh doesn't seem to be willing to meet his contractual demands, and the defender seems to be willing to sit out regular season games until the situation is resolved. He is a big part of what the Steelers do on defense, and he is going to be crucial to the success of the unit as a whole.
The NHL offseason has slowed down a bit, but there are still moves to be made from a few teams. Every year, there are late offseason moves that tend to heavily impact the playoff race. One team that could still add is the Ottawa Senators, since they still need another piece for the upcoming season. Ottawa has been linked to a few players this summer, with the front office discussing different deals. The Senators were mentioned as a possible landing spot for Pittsburgh Penguins star Rickard Rakell by NHL writer Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report. Ottawa could be a solid place for Rakell if the Penguins do trade him. "The Senators finally played their way back into a playoff spot in 2024-25, earning their first trip to the postseason since their 2016-17 Eastern Conference Finals run. "The big hang-up might be Ottawa's lack of a first-round pick in 2026 and a weak farm system that is lacking in top prospects. From a hockey standpoint, the Senators are a good match for Rakell. Logistically, they may not have the assets the Penguins would want," wrote Gretz. Rakell could help boost the Senators' offense, helping the team become even more formidable in the Eastern Conference. Ottawa made a surprising playoff appearance last season, and the team should be going all-in to go after a Stanley Cup title. The Penguins star put up 35 goals and 35 assists last season for Pittsburgh, and he could massively boost this team. Nobody on the Senators came close to these totals, so this could be a real difference-maker of a trade. Ottawa is finally back to being relevant in the East, and the front office has wanted to keep adding pieces. Bringing Rakell to town could be the answer, especially with the Penguins reportedly acting as sellers this offseason.
The college football season is almost here. The preseason Associated Press and Coaches Top-25 Polls are out. Pundits are delivering their conference power rankings, projected College Football Playoff brackets and All-America teams. Even as the season is just 10 days away for those playing in Week 0, which quarterbacks will start for some of the country's best programs remains to be seen. Teams continue to conduct their summer camps and scrimmages so that coaches can decipher which signal-caller they will go with to start the season. Here are the 10 most intriguing quarterback battles, in no particular order. Notre Dame The chatter is that things are picking up steam in the battle here. Redshirt freshman CJ Carr was the presumed favorite entering preseason camp, although sophomore Kenny Minchey is gaining momentum, experts say. Whichever QB wins out must face Miami on the road in the opener. Ohio State There's not much separation between sophomore Julian Sayin, a transfer from Alabama, and junior Lincoln Kienholz. With a scrimmage slated for this coming weekend, On3's Pete Nakos gives a slight edge to Sayin. Head coach Ryan Day has a tough decision looming. Michigan Four signal-callers with the Wolverines are duking it out for the starting spot. Leading the way is true freshman Bryce Underwood, the nation's No. 1 prospect in the 2025 class. Other contenders are sophomore Jadyn Davis and graduate students Mikey Keene and Jake Garcia. Michigan coaches have praised Underwood for his work ethic, and he could have the upper hand. Syracuse It's neck-and-neck between LSU transfer Rickie Collins and Notre Dame transfer Steve Angeli. Head coach Fran Brown named Collins the starter in the spring, but that was before Angeli moved from the Fighting Irish to the Orange. The buzz is that Angeli may have a slight edge at this juncture, with another scrimmage planned for this weekend. Tennessee This competition looks to come down to Appalachian State/UCLA transfer Joey Aguilar and redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger, although true freshman George MacIntyre played well during the Volunteers' latest scrimmage. Aguilar is trending to be the team's starter in Week 1 against Syracuse in Atlanta, according to Nakos. Colorado Things remain up in the air at quarterback for Deion Sanders' Buffaloes. The buzz is that Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter may be the favorite, although it would be foolish to count out true freshman Julian Lewis, a five-star prospect and a top-five quarterback in the 2025 cycle. Still, look for Salter to prevail. North Carolina Given that the Tar Heels' head coach is NFL legend Bill Belichick, don't expect a lot of chatter to come out from him before the season opener. That being said, it appears South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez is out in front of graduate student Max Johnson. UNC is expected to have its first official scrimmage this weekend. Purdue The two quarterbacks competing for the top job with the Boilermakers are North Carolina transfer Ryan Browne, who had previously played for Purdue, and Malachi Singleton, a transfer from Arkansas. Browne holds a small advantage, per On3. Oregon Redshirt sophomore Dante Moore is thought to be the starter for the Ducks, but it's not a certainty. Moore was the starting QB at UCLA in 2023, but then transferred to Oregon. He's battling redshirt sophomore Austin Novosad, who is entering his third season with the Ducks. Georgia For the Bulldogs, redshirt junior Gunner Stockton is anticipated to be the team's starter. However, redshirt freshman Ryan Puglisi has played well during Georgia's fall camp. Stockton is the clear favorite, but Puglisi has kept this quarterback competition interesting.
