Jonathan Kuminga’s restricted free agency situation remains unresolved as Golden State heads into training camp, but it dominated media day conversations.
Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler each addressed the standoff. Green predicted that if Kuminga signs a deal and “plays great,” everyone will eventually “forget (the situation) and move on.”
“As leaders on the team, you have to acknowledge what’s going on and don’t make it more than what it is, other than a team trying to figure out the situation that’s front of us and the challenge that’s front of us,” Curry told reporters, via Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area. “Knowing JK’s situation, knowing the new faces that we’re adding to the roster, we talk about it every year going into a training camp — what it’s going to take for that particular team to win.
“This is a little different because you have a guy that’s trying to figure out his situation, and we respect that process. It’s going to play out, and when he’s here, ready to work, we expect him to be locked in on doing what he needs to do to help us win.”
Meanwhile, the Warriors have agreed to a multi-year deal with Al Horford, but they’re expected to wait to finalize that signing until Kuminga’s situation is settled to maximize flexibility.
Horford wasn’t at media day, but veterans made it clear they’re excited about his arrival –even if they didn’t mention him by name.
“If we’re talking about a guy like that, he’s won it, which I really, really respect,” Butler said, per Poole. “Elite defender. Can make shots. Plays basketball the right way. Super smart. More than anything, he wins. So wherever that guy ends up, I know he’s going to help that team.”
Dallas made one massive offseason addition, drafting No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg, but the starting five is still up in the air.
“This is competition,” head coach Jason Kidd told reporters, per Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News. “We’re going to look at a lot of combinations.”
Kidd said everyone except Kyrie Irving is expected to fully participate in camp. For now, free agent signee D’Angelo Russell is expected to start in Irving’s place.
Irving continues to rehab from the ACL tear he suffered in March. While Mavs president Nico Harrison previously suggested Irving was “ahead of schedule,” Kidd pushed back on that characterization, per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. “He is doing quite well, as we can see, but he’s not ahead of schedule… Is he on schedule? It looks like it.”
Portland has added three players to its training camp roster: forward MarJon Beauchamp, center Liam Robbins, and guard Javonte Cooke, bringing the total roster to 20 players.
Beauchamp, 24, was the 24th overall pick in 2022 and has appeared in 135 NBA games for the Bucks, Clippers, and Knicks, averaging 4.1 points in 10.9 minutes per game.
Robbins, 26, is a 7-footer who spent most of last season on a two-way deal with Milwaukee before being waived in February.
Cooke, 26, has been a productive G League scorer, averaging 17.0 PPG last year for the Oklahoma City Blue.
All three players are believed to have signed Exhibit 10 contracts, giving Portland the flexibility to convert them to two-way deals or retain their G League rights with bonuses if they spend at least 60 days with the Rip City Remix.
