'What Did I Do?': Dwight Howard Opens Up on Kobe Bryant’s Distant Attitude, Reveals How Mamba Didn’t Speak to Him
Brett Davis-Imagn Images

It would be somewhat of an understatement to say Dwight Howard’s relationship with the late Kobe Bryant was anything but harmonious during their lone season together with the LA Lakers in 2012-13. Their highly anticipated partnership went downhill, as the two never truly found their collective rhythm on the court.

Kobe Bryant scored 27.3 points per game that season, while Dwight grabbed 12.4 rebounds. The LA Lakers finished 45-37, landing 3rd in the Pacific Division and 7th in the Western Conference. San Antonio ended their playoff run fast, sweeping them 4-0 in the first round. Dwight bolted for Houston that summer, leaving behind bruised egos, unmet expectations, and unanswered questions.

Over a decade later, Howard still carries that friction in his heart. While visiting the PBD Podcast, host Patrick Bet-David prodded the former No. 1 pick to revisit those raw memories. He opened with Smush Parker’s story, sitting next to Kobe without hearing a word. Then he pivoted, almost gleefully, to Howard’s year in purple and gold.

Howard took the bait and shared a story: “I had a moment with Kobe where we were on the plane together during the season; I was playing with the Lakers. We were on the plane together, me and his family, and he didn’t really speak.”

Howard did not lash out, as Patrick Bet-David may have hoped (looking for a pseudo-viral moment), but he did sound confused. Still piecing it together, he said, “But at the All-Star game, when we played on the same team, he didn’t speak [to me]. It’s like he didn’t want to be next to me at that time. So it was a little weird because I’m like this: Kobe, my teammate. I looked up to him. I came out of high school; he came out of high school.”

Bet-David pressed for negativity, but Howard kept it classy. Instead of slandering Bryant, he reflected calmly. “He’s a lot older than me, but then again, it could have been something like: hey, I’m trying to see where his head is at,” Howard said.

Even now, Howard wrestles with that disconnect. His voice softened as he tried to make sense of it. “I’ll never know. I’m a young guy at the time. I’m thinking, why would my teammate not talk to me? What did I do that was so bad?”

That moment revealed a different Howard—a vulnerable eight-time All-Star still wrestling with silence from a legend. With Kobe gone, he may never get the answers he once hoped for.

While Howard was able to redeem his time in LA, winning a chip with the Lakers in 2020, he was seemingly never able to bury the hatchet with Bryant, who passed away early in 2020.

76ers unexpectedly waive veteran guard despite career season

The Sixers are waiving Ricky Council IV, the team announced in a press release. Council signed a four-year, partially guaranteed deal with the Sixers in 2024, which contained a team option for the 2026-27 season. Last season, he averaged 7.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 17.1 minutes per night — all career-high numbers. Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports notes that the timing of the move was unexpected, given that Council’s guarantee date is on Jan. 10, 2026, and the team currently has an open roster spot if they need it to add restricted free agent Quentin Grimes. While Council struggled with his three-point shot last season, he emerged as a reliable depth contributor, playing a team-high 73 games while bringing athleticism and energy from the wing positions.

All signs point to Yankees moving on from Anthony Volpe

With the trade for Ryan McMahon now complete, it would seem New York Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman has fulfilled one of his three priorities. He can now cross third base off the list, which leaves the rotation and bullpen as his remaining priorities. However, according to one Yankees writer, Cashman might not be done with the infield. Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reported this after the McMahon trade: “The Yankees may not be done adding to their infield. A team source said the Yankees are interested in adding a right-handed hitter who could play the infield.” Kirschner adds that the Yankees have had interest in Willi Castro and Amed Rosario. But the question now is, how would another player fit in the Yankees’ infield? Needless to say, Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. aren’t going anywhere, and McMahon is just getting there. That leaves the low-hanging fruit. Anthony Volpe has been at the center of controversy all this season. His 13 errors, many of which had come at make-or-break moments, amount to the second-highest total in the game. In addition, his bat has not been able to compensate, hitting .214/.286/.407 with 14 home runs. There was always a lot to like about Volpe. He won a Gold Glove in his rookie year, his power has always been promising and his speed is nothing to scoff at. Unfortunately, his glove has become a liability and his speed has also produced very few results. Volpe has swiped just 10 bags in 17 attempts. His power is the one thing that still has some upside, but it hasn’t been enough to justify a spot in the lineup. Both Castro and Rosario have been far more productive at the plate this season than Volpe. Kirschner doesn’t clarify how serious the Yankees are in their pursuit of another infielder, but that most likely isn’t available information. Having just turned 24, Volpe could still become the type of player that was expected from him as a top prospect. However, his recent performance has weighed heavily on his team’s efforts and it may be buying him a ticket out of the Bronx — or at least a spot on the bench.

Why Yankees' trade for All-Star 3B is disappointing

The New York Yankees’ first move ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline falls a bit flat. They traded two prospects most fans have never heard of to acquire Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon, a lackluster move that indicates New York is throwing in the towel on the 2025 season. McMahon is an upgrade — but only a slight one. Yankees GM Brian Cashman replaced a .147 hitter in Oswald Peraza with a .217 hitter in McMahon, who also happens to lead the National League in strikeouts (127). But really, New York just added another Anthony Volpe — one of the biggest problems in the Bombers’ lineup — to the left side of their infield. The two infielders’ 2025 stats tell virtually the same sad tale: McMahon: .217/.314/.403, 16 home runs Volpe: .214/.286/.400, 13 home runs The Yankees should have risked a top prospect or two for Arizona Diamondbacks power-hitting third baseman Eugenio Suarez. A 2026 free agent, Suarez is a rental, but with his .252/.325/.593 slash line, 33 home runs and MLB-leading 86 RBI, he’d be a huge upgrade at third base, rather than a slight one. Instead, the Yankees opted for a player who they’ll have control over until 2028 and cost them almost nothing to acquire. Apparently, they believe McMahon will prove valuable in the long run, based on his advanced analytics. After all, he’s been crushing the ball in 2025, averaging a 94 mph exit velocity. However, his ability to hit the ball hard doesn’t mean he’s just been unlucky this year, as his xBA is just .232 — not too far below his .240 career actual batting average. Compare that to another guy who’s known for hitting the ball hard in Yankees first baseman Ben Rice, who is hitting just .232 but has an xBA of .289. It doesn’t matter how hard McMahon hits the ball if he tends to hit it directly at a fielder. There’s still a week until the trade deadline, but don’t expect the Yankees to make any truly splashy moves. Suarez was the better choice to fix New York’s third base issues, and their pivot to McMahon was disappointing.

NFL Notes: Christian Wilkins Fallout, Raiders Training Camp Observations

After a busy and noteworthy week, players from the Las Vegas Raiders are vying for spots on the roster as training camp heats up. With the goal of improving from last year’s performance, head coach Pete Carroll is energizing and motivating the team. Currently, there are no pads, but many of those pads will be cracking on July 31. Before that date, it will be crucial for players to excel in seven-on-sevens and one-on-ones. Additionally, just in case you missed it, Christian Wilkins has been released. Jamal Adams was signed just before training camp and has been practicing with the linebackers. It was certainly an intriguing development, but you could argue that he fits with what Carroll is trying to implement—a player-coach at this point in his career. It is crucial to understand that the starting lineups will change before the preseason starts. Nonetheless, the lineups on day one are significant. The “Starters” on Day 1: Dont’e Thornton Jr. gets early praise There are not many humans who stand at six foot five and run 4.3 forty-yard dashes. He has been receiving most of the first-team reps during training camp. Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly believes he has been performing well. “He has a great skillset for someone that tall and that fast,” Kelly said. “It is comforting to Geno [Smith].” Nonetheless, Thornton Jr. is being placed in a position to be a focal point of this offense. After averaging 25.4 yards per reception in college, he will be the field stretcher for Las Vegas. Thayer Munford Jr. missed Day 1 of Raiders training camp For the purpose of maintaining unpredictability against opponents, injuries do not need to be disclosed. Thayer Munford Jr. missed the first day of training camp, but no details were reported. Additionally, the 2022 seventh-round draft pick is competing for a starting position on the offensive line. He needs to improve upon his 45.9 Pro Football Focus grade in 2024. Right now, only the offensive guard positions are up for grabs. Last season, he primarily played as an offensive tackle. On the second day of training camp, the former Ohio State Buckeye was back on the practice field. Can the 25-year-old offensive lineman win a starting job? Who has been performing in the first two days? Maxx Crosby has clearly been the standout player in practice. His relentless effort and tenacity have become a daily hallmark for this Defensive Player of the Year candidate. Tyree Wilson is also beginning to showcase his potential as a strong pass rusher. Meanwhile, the defensive backs have been actively making plays throughout practice. Isaiah Pola-Mao and Trey Taylor both caught interceptions on Thursday. These were the first turnovers of training camp. Taylor also broke up a pass on day one. Additionally, Sam Webb broke up a short route on Wednesday and almost caught an interception. Day one was an evenly matched practice, but the second day was won by the defense. On the first day, tight end Ian Thomas had the best highlight of the day with a one-handed touchdown snag. Overall, the defensive line has emerged as the strongest position group during these practices. July 31 is set to be a crucial day for evaluating the potential of this roster. In terms of roster changes, a significant development occurred on Thursday, leaving the defensive tackle position relatively thin. Maybe you heard? Fallout from Christian Wilkins’ release by the Raiders… The fact is, there was considerable hope from Raider Nation as Wilkins recovered from his foot injury. A healthy Wilkins in the middle would have created numerous opportunities for Crosby and Malcolm Koonce. However, the Raiders did not wait for the depth chart to become unmanageable; they chose to claim defensive tackle Keondre Coburn off waivers from the Tennessee Titans. Still, no one can replace Wilkins’ impact at this juncture with training camp in full swing. Wilkins and the Raiders will be back in the news, especially with the legal and ethical issues that will arise from this mess.
